In my childhood, there was this “class” I attended after school.
A weird sort of “holy shmoly shamianiac” class run by a bunch of ladies that were “Sai Baba” devotees.
I dont know if you’ve heard of him, but he’s one of those miracle makers in India (so they say). he’s got long curly hair and a straggly beard, and dresses in Saffron all the time.
Take away the FAT on his body – put on jeans and sunglasses – and insert my face, and he could be me. Or I could be him. Hehe.
Not that I want to be!
But it’s interesting.
Lots of folks equate the spiritual with poverty.
Not true, bro.
In China, that hill I climbed had a monastery of sorts right there along with a gigantic temple.
The “Babas” and monks in there were supposed to have taken vows of celibacy, and “renouncing themselves from all worldly desires”.
Yet, I saw BMW’s go in there all the time.
They wore fancy watches.
Their clothes were of the finest quality.
And lots of girls passed in and out of those air conditioned rooms as well, hehe.
Believe me, spirituality and money is ONE AND THE SAME!
But anyway . . .
So when I was young, I think around 12, and yours truly has never been either a follower or religious, Mom I believe sent me to the class.
Dad wasn’t much of a one for it.
He wanted to send me to tennis classes, and the timings clashed, so sometimes it was “Sai Baba” stuff, and sometimes tennis.
The former was strange in many ways, but it was calm and peaceful at least, and the ONE thing the ladies taught us stuck with me.
Affirmations.
Which I often used without telling anyone to “brave” (not conquer as yet, hehe) my fear of HEIGHTS.
But other than that?
The incense, the “pictures of Babas”, the ladies asking us young uns to intone the words, all of it was rather boring I must admit.
The tennis?
Instructor was pretty cool, but he wasn’t into his job as much as he should have been. We talked more about girls than anything else, hehe.
And if I had the choice?
I’d choose a swimming pool where I could swim LAPS – and drink a ton of beer after that. Hehe. Hey, that’s my choice. Didnt say it was the healthiest one!
And at the age of 13, well, all guys dream about just that . . .
But anyway, that lesson musta stuck.
Because I’ve ALWAYS believed the spiritual is and should be part of life.
Some of the most hard headed men like Henry Kaiser, shipping magnate who once said “You can imagine your future” (and he’s right – guess what everyone does either consciously or not) are the most spiritual.
Ford. Steve Jobs. Really, you could insert anyone you admire into the photo.
They’re ALL spiritual to a degree.
So yes, there needs to be a blend between the two, but physical culture is equally important in my book.
Blend the two, realize that MONEY isn’t a bad thing and is equally SPIRITUAL – and you’ve got a winner!
And on that note, I’m out.
Back soon!
Best,
Rahul Mookerjee
