OK, so I’ve been sitting here ruminating on sports (I was doing that last night too).
Perhaps it’s got something to do with the fact that my daughter for the past few years has been going to these classes as she grows up.
Basketball. Swimming. I believe in the middle she did something else also for a short while.
She cycles in the park. Runs etc. Does many things – and of course, Kiddie Fitness workouts too!
(The recent bit of fat I wrote about was probably due to overgorging on sweet sugary stuff, but it’ll be gone in a few days flat – that I can guarantee without even taking part “actively” in that process!)
Of course, what I told her is the key to it.
But anyway, it got me thinking.
If yours truly had to choose one SPORT – not workout – but SPORT – which would it be?
Workout wise, it’s a tough choice. I’d probably choose pull-ups – but then handstand pushups would complain. And if I chose those two, the hill would knock me in the ass!
And so forth …
But SPORTS wise, it’s a simple answer for me.
Swimming.
Basketball, wrestling, marital arts – especially SOCCER – volleyball – handball – squash – all these are fine, fine sports my friend.
But for an overall body workout, nothing really beats swimming – but there is one major drawback.
Not that you don’t build strength by swimming, as you might imagine.
You do immensely in certain areas.
But it’s a WATER sport, and the very thing that makes it attractive for those with weight issues, joint issues and other health problems and therefore “easier” to do – is the lack of gravity.
And thats precisely the problem with it.
Not to mention swimmers have incredibly weak legs as compared to their upper bodies – so they need to and usually DO balance that water work out with LAND work.
Ask Michael Phelps, and he’ll probably tell you he did tons of pushups and pull-ups for one in addition to his swimming.
End of the day, we were meant to live on land my friend.
And if you just do water based exercises, you’re ridding- – well, thats the wrong term – you’re “divesting” yourself a lot of the benefits and results which you cannot get from anything other than land based workouts.
One works without the other.
The other, however isn’t ideal without the first …
So always remember – sports or no sports – there is NO substitute to bodyweight work – or land based exercise!
And that, my brother, is that.
Back soon!
Best,
Rahul Mookerjee
