A short while ago, I saw the following posted in a WeChat group I’m a part of.

It was . . . well, a group I shouldn’t really be a part of given I deleted most groups off my list, but a group which I’m a part of because it’s a local city group, and because sometimes, just sometimes, I go in there to see what the “inmates” are up to.

And my latest visit didn’t disappoint.

Turned out they were talking about China, and the visa exemptions that have been “seemingly handed out willy nilly” to the few remaining die hard ESL teachers there.

What do I mean?

Well, simply put this: this – – Chinese visas (those that are of the “non resident” type) (and those that most of these ESL “gurus” work on – – illegally at that, I might add) have a “duration of stay” per entry.

So if you’re on, say a business visa in China, you may have anywhere between 30-180 days of stay per entry, depending upon . . .

Ditto for tourist etc. The actual visa itself could be valid for years, but the duration of stay is something important to consider.

You could have a 10 year valid visa, but you’d still have to exit the country and re-enter every 60 days, for instance, if that is what your visa stipulated.

And . . . given the COVID-19 scare all over the place, the Chinese have been ignoring the “duration of stay” (normally a very strict penalty if that duration is not adhered to and the person ”overstays”) for the nonce.

First it was an “automatic two month” extension given to all that needed it. (again, note this doenst apply to RESIDENT people, or those that are there doing things LEGALLY on the right work permits etc).

Doesn’t apply to yours truly either, for those wondering, hehe.

Then after that, it was a “case by case” 30 day extension on a humanitarian basis.

But it was (especially given that ESL is a dead industry and has been for years) always going to be a uphill battle for the backpackers and gurus out there . . . most of them not qualified to do what they are, or they’d probably be on the right visas (or have a biz of their own doing it).

And as borders gradually re-open (actually, the EXIT borders have been open for a while now when it comes to china, but of course, these people didn’t want to leave so) . . . the inevitable, which was postponed for months is now starting to happen.

People are now being told they have to shape up, or ship out.

IN other words, do what you got to, but legally, and no, visa “extensions” aren’t a lifetime deal!

Lots of people “live” on on business and tourists visas in the mainland, a practice which is technically illegal, and now with repeated quarantines and what not every time they re-enter, I’d think both the person and the business employing them illegally would think again, or several times.

30 day stay. 14 day quarantine (paid at the person’s OWN expense) on either side of it.

Hmm. How’s that gonna work out Jack?

I didn’t think so!

And yet, you have people clamoring about “Oh, it’ll be OK! They’re handing out extensions like candy! Everything will go back to normal!”

ESL, as I’ve said before is an industry where people have their heads stuck in the sand more so than usual and one fine gentleman (I’ve referred to him before) had this to say. (amongst other things).

“You have to wake up and face reality! The borders are going to open very soon, and you WILL have to LEAVE! Think of the country as your own business. How would YOU want to run things if you were them?”

And though he was the lone voice of reason, he was RIGHT.

Anyway . . . this applies to fitness too my friend.

Someday, you’re going to have to wake up and realize that despite all the curls you’re doing at the gym, you ain’t getting REAL strength from them, and you’re going to have to ACKNOWELDGE that all the pavement pounding in the world hasn’t quite got rid of the pudge hanging off your sides.

Or, that the “bro’ing” going on at the gyms hasn’t gotten you to where you can do ONE single pull-up – or handstand – or handstand pushup – and lets face it. We ALL want to do those exercises, and do ‘em well, and for good reason!

And yet, you still have people “sticking their head in the sand” and ignoring reality as they grow fatter, more miserable, and more discontented with their fitness levels (and usually correspondingly) life in general.

If you take a look in the mirror, and don’t like the person staring back at you, my friend; then CHANGE things, and do so now.

Ignoring reality (or impending reality which is pretty much what I’ve been saying all along about what is going on globally) ain’t gonna work my friend.

Let me tell you, gyms etc aren’t going to be as easily accessible as you think over the next few months to say the least, virus or none.

IT’s going to come down to YOU. And your OWN BODY.

And what you can DO WITH IT.

And that might well determine if you’ll survive in the impending dog fight; and even THRIVE ; or be relegate to the ranks of the “has been”.

Might sound overly bombastic, but it’s TRUE my friend. Think about this for a while, and let me know your thoughts!

Best,

Rahul Mookerjee
