Why everyone visualizes whether they know or admit it

If there is one takeaway I Took from Dr Maxwell Maltz’s famous and bestselling book Psycho Cybernetics, it is this.

The “elastic band” analogy wherein he explained that your self image rather than the external “show” image you have of YOU is basically what determines your achievements and “station” in life in EVERY way.

You may think you can rise above your self image but you cannot, my friend.

And if you do, it will be temporary, and eventually you will snap back to where you think you belong.

Like an elastic band stretched.

Conversely, work on the self image, which astoundingly enough is the EASY thing to do in many ways if you just DO it … and that elastic band expands without conscious effort.

This took me a while to digest.

But digest I did, and the rest is history!

But anyway, visualization was something he greatly emphasized. I had read about it before, but I always dismissed it as airy fairy stuff.

Despite the results I was getting which while I didnt do it in a traditional way of “sit in a chair and visualize” – I WAS doing in very poignant other ways – I just didnt know it!

I was thinking about a lot of stuff this morning.

And I was writing some goals down (which you may or may not have to or want to do – I haven’t written things in cursive for the majority of my adult life, but I started at 37!).

Or 36, I can’t remember.

But anyway … that aside – I looked at what I wrote.

How could I write this without thinking of a picture first?

Look at the word “picture”.

What does it evoke to you?

A …well, picture!

WORDS are PICTURES my friend. There are no two ways around this (unless you dont know the language).

And we think in pictures.

Why do you think advertising for one is so heavy on PICTURES?

Because even the canniest of us “get taken in” by pictures, because that is how our subconscious minds “want” and desire!

Anyway, I’m saying this to the people that don’t believe in the power of the mind, and visualization.

Recently, I was chatting with a long term customer whose wife has a case of what they call the “long term” plague from China.

I suggested to him she use the power of the mind along with other things to recover.

“I’m getting better day by day” (Emil Coue). 

I just threw the suggestion out there.

He replied back with “Oh my! I don’t want to open that Pandora’s box of worms” because “she would never believe in such a thing”.

I can relate to what he said.

When I told others initially about visualization, they reacted in a manner I never thought they would.

I expected them to be happy.

Instead, I learnt you cannot make people see the “light”.

And in most cases, even showing them the way is WRONG.

It’s only when they “want” that they “will”, and in most cases, expending the energy to make them want is NOT worth it.

Anyway, more on this on my coaching calls.

But for now, remember there is a reason visualization is the FIRST commandment of Physical Success in 0 Excuses Fitness.

There is a damn good reason it’s mentioned in the book on pull-ups.

And Zero to Hero! 

And I talk about it either directly or indirectly in everything I do, speak, say or think.

And so goeth it.
